Overview

AutoZone had reached out to Konrad in hopes of accomplishing a complete overhaul of their in-store digital experience as well as compiling and unifying all of their existing digital properties into a cohesive design system as well as redesigning their Z-Net (in store kiosk) system.

Phase 1

Autozone had initially reached out to Konrad with the intention to consolidate all of the design collateral across all of their digital properties into one, cohesive design system. The digital properties that were included within this were their e-commerce site, in-store branding and deals, and social media posts and applications. The goal for the design team was to not only audit and collect all of the different design collateral but to create a comprehensive guide for future designers to be able to easily reference when creating designs.

Phase 2

The next and longest engagement we've had with AutoZone includes the task of re-thinking and re-designing their in-store sales platform called Z-Net. The purpose of Z-net is to give AutoZone sales team members (called AutoZoners) the ability to search and filter through the products AutoZone sells and provide customers with a recommendation on what they should buy. Our objectives in this phase included:

‍Research

  • Refine the Z-net personas to understand the users of the platform
  • Create journey maps for both customers and store operators
  • Synthesize previous research conducted by AutoZone to understand opportunities, pain points, and key objectives of the organization
  • Hold Design Thinking Session workshops to summarize discovery, customer journey maps, business goals and features to be designed

Creating a Dashboard

One of the issues that we wanted to address is when the user lands on the platform, the landing page has no existing or current value besides just displaying how many products we have within the platform. Therefore, we wanted to broach the idea of having a dashboard instead that adjusts based on the user type which we identified in our research rounds. We're currently still ideating but the images below helps capture that effort.

Interviews & Testing

  • Conduct onsite visits and customer observations within AutoZone stores and analyze outputs to define the features and workflows to be considered in the redesign
  • Conduct onsite user testing to gain validation of prototypes with in-store users
  • Overall, we conducted 4 onsite rounds of in-person interviews and testing

Design

  • Develop multiple concepts based on the customer's and client's needs
  • Create medium fidelity designs
  • Build prototypes for testing and client-facing demos

Phase 3

After we had thoroughly explored different areas and concepts of AutoZone's in-store digital experience, this phase was focused on enhancing and building out the designs for Z-Net. This phase was divided between three different sections: Performing a component audit on existing components within their internal Design System, translating our wireframes into high fidelity designs and building out a more comprehensive design system based off of these. Please note that this phase is currently in-progress.
